On May 5, was appointed Socialist Patxi Lopez as the new president (lehendakari) in the Basque country and yesterday handed over the symbol of power, stick electric bass the command from the outgoing Juan Jose Ibarretxe, PNV (Partido Nacional Vasco) during an official ceremony in Guernika.

This is the first time since the Basque regional autonomy that is not power controlled by the bourgeoisie Basque nationalist party PNV, and certainly the first and last time that the Socialists (PSOE) joins forces with conservative Partido Popular (PP) in order to take power.

The new power constellation in the Basque Country will most certainly be under pressure and terrorism are certainly unlikely to diminish. Several small parties that support ETA were allowed, for example, does not participate in the regional elections. On May 6 was a bomb attack against a mobile antenna in Cantabria and if not ETA's innermost core weakened by a crackdown in France in April, when ETA leader Jurdan Martitegi and six other ethanol members were arrested, so we would certainly have seen more terrorist attacks in connection with the transfer of power.
